Marine Corp Birthday November 10th

Marine Corps Birthday

On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776, under the command of Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas.

The first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines, Nicholas remained the senior Marine officer throughout the American Revolution and is considered to be the first Marine Commandant. The Treaty of Paris in April 1783 brought an end to the Revolutionary War and as the last of the Navy’s ships were sold, the Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence.

Following the Revolutionary War, increasing conflict with Revolutionary France led to the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on 11 July 1798. Marines saw action in the quasi-war with France, landed in Santo Domingo, and took part in many operations against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli”.

Since then, Marines have participated in all the wars of the United States, and in most cases were the first service members to fight. To date, Marines have executed more than 300 landings on foreign shores.

Today, there are more than 200,000 active-duty and reserve Marines, organized into three divisions stationed at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton and Okinawa, Japan. Each division has one or more expeditionary units, ready to launch major operations anywhere on short notice. Marines expeditionary units are self-sufficient, with their own tanks, artillery, and air forces. The motto of the service is Semper Fidelis, meaning “Always Faithful” in Latin.

Recognizing a man with a great impact on the US

Abraham Lincoln is regarded as one of America’s greatest heroes due to both his incredible impact on the nation and his unique appeal. His is a remarkable story of the rise from humble beginnings to achieve the highest office in the land; then, a sudden and tragic death at a time when his country needed him most to complete the great task remaining before the nation. Lincoln’s distinctively human and humane personality and historical role as savior of the Union and emancipator of the slaves creates a legacy that endures. His eloquence of democracy and his insistence that the Union was worth saving embody the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve.

Navy Day October 27th

Since its founding in 1902 (with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt) the Navy League of the United States has provided a powerful voice for a stronger sea service to Congress and to the American People. The Navy League has grown to become the foremost citizens’ organization to serve, support, and stand with all the U.S. sea services; the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. flag Merchant Marine.

With oceans bordering its eastern, western, and southern coasts, the United States is indeed a maritime nation and requires strong sea services, which are critical elements of homeland security and peace.

Navy League has compiled an impressive record of accomplishments by members who are recognized for their integrity, patriotism, and community service. Since the Navy Leagues founding, it has grown to become a worldwide organization with more than 60,000 members in 250 councils. Council membership includes more than 250 corporate and community affiliate members as well.

Today, the Navy Leagues original mission is focused on two main initiatives; First, the Navy Leagues public education efforts are designed to inform the nation and its political leaders of the vital importance to the country of comprehensive and fully prepared sea services. Second, the Navy League, primarily through its councils, provides support for active duty sea services personnel and their families.

In keeping with its educational objective, the Navy League also supports Americas young people through successful youth programs, including sponsorship of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the Navy League Foundation Scholarship Program. Navy Day in the United States is still largely recognized as October 27th.

The flag of Canada was officially adopted on February 15, 1965. The Canadian Red Ensign, bearing the Union Jack and the shield of the royal arms of Canada, was lowered and then, on the stroke of noon, the new maple leaf flag was raised. The crowd sang the national anthem O Canada, followed by the royal anthem, God Save the Queen.

The following words, spoken on that momentous day by the Honorable Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate, added further symbolic meaning to the flag: “The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.

The stylish red maple leaf has been the national symbol of Canada for over 150 years. Red and white are the official colors of Canada, proclaimed by King George V in 1921. Canadian Province and Territory Flags

The U.S. Navy Turns 240

On October 13, 2015 the U.S. Navy will turn 240.  On Friday, October 13, 1775, meeting in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty, and to send them out on a cruise of three months to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America. This was the original legislation out of which the Continental Navy grew and as such constitutes the birth certificate of the navy.

Fly your Navy flags proudly, today and everyday, to thank those who give their lives for our freedoms.  All Flag-Works Navy flags are made in the USA.  Order yours today: http://www.flag-works.com/Navy_flags.htm
