On January 26, 1788 the First Fleet under Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sidney Cove in Australia and claimed the land for Great Britain. The First Fleet was made up mostly of prisoners who established a penal colony in Australia.

The 26th was celebrated early on as the anniversary of the landing date of the First Fleet. For the first 100 years the day was celebrated mostly by people in New South Wales. Other colonies had their own foundation days that they celebrated.

In 1888, one hundred years after the First Fleet landed, all of the colony capitals but Adelaide celebrated the day as Anniversary Day. By 1935 all the states celebrated the 26th as Anniversary Day.

In 1946 the day was renamed to Australia Day.

The Islamic State took responsibility for the attack and in a speech before both houses of Parliament; French President François Hollande said that France “was at war.”

The flag of Canada was officially adopted on February 15, 1965. The Canadian Red Ensign, bearing the Union Jack and the shield of the royal arms of Canada, was lowered and then, on the stroke of noon, the new maple leaf flag was raised. The crowd sang the national anthem O Canada, followed by the royal anthem, God Save the Queen.

The following words, spoken on that momentous day by the Honorable Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate, added further symbolic meaning to the flag: “The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.

The stylish red maple leaf has been the national symbol of Canada for over 150 years. Red and white are the official colors of Canada, proclaimed by King George V in 1921. Canadian Province and Territory Flags

New Hampshire Hall of Flags

Located just a few blocks down from Flag-Works over America in Concord,  New Hampshire is the state capital. The building was designed by architect Stuart James Park, and built between the years of 1816-1819. Inside the main lobby area of this historic building is the Hall of Flags formerly known as Doric Hall, which was named and designed after a similar display in the Massachusetts capitol building by Charles Bulfinch.  The halls feature over 100 battle flags carried by New Hampshire soldiers, representing the Civil War, Spanish-American War, WW I,  WW II, and the Vietnam War.  The flags surrounding you go back to  our nations infancy.  Some of these flags are so old that there isn’t barely anything left of them, others are torn and tattered due to going through the riggers of war.

Many of  the flags in the hall are here today because of those who gave their life to protect these flags and what they stand for. All of the flags have a story, and this room is not lacking. Some of the flags are from different states, some are from foreign countries and some are from our country.  It is quite a site to see to be in the same room inches away from a flag that may have been held by such important people like Franklin Pierce the 14th president of the United States and General John Stark, as well as many other people who founded this great country. Just like the men who fought to protect the flag then, we have men and women now who fight to protect our flag today.  Our hope is that one day some of the flags that they fight to protect may be added to this room full of historic flags.
