The Service Flag is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities the United States may be engaged in for the duration of such hostilities.

BLUE STAR – IN SERVICE BANNERS AND FLAGS

The In Service Banner was designed in 1917 by WWI Army Captain Robert Quessner, the service star banner is traditionally hung in the window of the home of a person who has a family member currently serving in the U.S. military.  That person can be a son, daughter, wife, husband, etc.  The blue star represents one family member currently in service; a gold star on a banner represents a family member who was killed during service.  Seeing these banners today in windows of homes reminds every one of us that war is not something that happens overseas on far-away lands, but is something that affects every street and neighborhood in our country.  One, Two and Three Blue Star Banners are 8″ x 15″ with crossbar and gold cord tassel.  Also available are 3’x 5′ flags.

Gadsden Flag

220px-Gadsden_flag.svg

The Gadsden flag continues to be relevant today.  It still symbolizes peoples ideals whether in agreement or distain.  It relays to people that the person flying the flag is a proud American, an his /her beliefs are founded in the US Constitution.

The Gadsden flag is a historical American flag with a yellow field depicting a rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike. Positioned below the rattlesnake are the words “Don’t tread on me”. The flag is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden (1724–1805), who designed it in 1775 during the American Revolution. It was also used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag, along with the Moultrie Flag.

In modern times, the Gadsden flag is often associated with political movements such as libertarianism and the American Tea Party, and has been used by U.S. Soccer supporter groups including Sam’s Army and The American Outlaws since the late 1980’s.

Washington State Flag

washington flag

The flag of the State of Washington consists of the state seal (which bears an image of George Washington) on a field of dark green. It is the only U.S. state flag with a field of green as well as the only state flag with the image of an American president.

In honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. Colloquially, it is widely known as Presidents Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents, not just George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is also in February. The term”Presidents Day” was coined in a deliberate attempt to change the holiday into one honoring multiple presidents.

Washington’s Commander-in-Chief Flag

images (1)

Tradition tells us George Washington’s Commander-in-Chief Flag was the personal standard of the Commander of the Continental Army everywhere he went. The presence of the flag meant George Washington was there. It saw every battle and location that the Commander-in-Chief did during the Revolutionary War. It is unique due to its 6-pointed stars and was allegedly designed by Washington himself.

Why did Washington use 6-pointed stars? Some historians claim that Washington favored 6-pointed stars and that’s the reason he used them in his personal standard. Another possibility is that he was referencing the stars he wore as a general, which also had 6 points. Washington never wore more than 3 stars, but they did have 6 points. He also is known to have worn a light blue sash as a symbol of his authority. The blue sash and 6-pointed general stars may have been the source of the design for the flag. He simply made 13 stars to represent the 13 colonies.
