Serapis is a name given to this unconventional, early United States ensign flown from the captured British frigate Serapis. At the September 23, 1779 Battle of Flamborough Head, U.S. Navy Captain John Paul Jones captured the Serapis, but his own ship, the Bonhomme Richard, sank, and her ensign had been blown from the mast into the sea during the battle. Jones, now commanding the Serapis without having a U.S. ensign to fly on it, traveled to a nearby province and had this flag made by a local seamstress based off of a rough description of the US Flag.
The Serapis flag has 13 stripes alternating red , white and blue.
